JATHO - Japan America Transportation Historical Organization is a group of individuals in the Pacific Northwest passionate about celebrating US-Japan relations through the preservation of transportation history. In order to further our vision, we are currently undergoing incorporation as a Washington state not-for-profit organization with the long term vision of building a permanent museum in the Pacific Northwest. We have outlined a four step process to make our vision a reality:
Define Mission, Scope and Focus
-We have defined our mission statement as “to Celebrate US-Japan friendship through the preservation of transportation history”.
-We are working diligently to prepare articles of incorporation and bylaws needed for incorporation and 501(c)(3) application.
-Our organization aims to preserve all modes of transportation with a heavy emphasis on light aircraft, road vehicles, and rail cars.
Organize Leadership and Funding Structure
-We have successfully recruited an enthusiastic and dedicated board to lead the organization.
-We are working with the local community as well as individuals and organizations aboard to form a funding plan. In addition, we are seeking opportunities for loans and grants.
Purchase Land
-We have determined the space needed to accommodate one railcar as an outdoor exhibit, and one light aircraft and one road vehicle as indoor exhibits.
- We are actively seeking opportunities for capital funding as well as land grants.
Build Temporary Museum
-We will obtain all necessary permits and zoning approvals to ensure our good legal standing and responsible stewardship of the community.
-In order to properly preserve our artifacts and ensure the safety of our guests, we will make due consideration for climate control and security needs.
-To conserve our limited resources, we foresee our temporary location operating limited hours.
Acquisition Strategy
-Securing the temporary location will allow for the acquisition of larger artifacts such as railcars and aircraft.
-We are continually seeking opportunities for artifact acquisition, through donations as well as loans.
-We are also seeking opportunities to store large artifacts while the temporary location is being secured.
Create Database
-We will catalogue and document our collection in order to create a database with detailed information on each artifact.
Design Museum Layout & Exhibits
-Work with professional curators and designers to create engaging displays.
Secure Major Funding
-Launch capital campaigns, apply for additional grants, and seek sponsorships.
Hire Staff & Volunteers
-Bring on curators, educators, and operations personnel.
-Offer school tours, lectures, and hands-on exhibits.
Host a Grand Opening
-Generate publicity with a high-profile launch event. This will ensure the success of our future fundraising efforts as well as help maintain foot traffic.
Maintain & Expand Exhibits
-Continue acquiring artifacts, rotating displays, and upgrading facilities.
